What sets the new OTUL® Beta 400 down underquilt apart?

During hammock sleep a conventional sleeping bag is significantly compressed between your body and the hammock fabric, which reduces insulation underneath and at the sides. This can be uncomfortable even on warm summer nights. The OTUL underquilt traps a layer of heated air around the hammock so your night becomes calm and comfortable. It completely eliminates the need for traditional or self-inflating sleeping pads.

OTUL Beta 400 is the latest model in our famous OTUL line. It measures 215 × 120 cm, weighs 750 g and provides comfort from -8°C to 8°C. It is filled with 400 g of down, optimally matching typical camping conditions from late spring to early autumn.

We’ve joined forces with the legend, Alpine Equipment Workshop MAŁACHOWSKI, to create a new series of down products designed for hammock camping and ultralight camping. We were united by an expert approach to gear design and the reputation of innovative brands pushing the domestic outdoor market forward. The result of our collaboration is the OTUL Beta hammock underquilt series, available in summer and winter versions. These products refresh their segment by offering an original technological solution: β-chamber construction.

What’s that β-chamber construction about? 

A unique feature of OTUL Beta is its β-chamber construction, with cross-sections mirroring the shape of a capital “B” on its back. When wrapped around the hammock, the “bellies” of the B-shaped chambers come together to seal the system. In lab tests the β-chambers outperformed H-style chambers with the same amount of down. The central chambers have larger volume so more down can loft where it’s needed most: on shoulders, back and hips.

Easy adjustment and a snug fit.

OTUL fits any hammock model. Hanging and tuning the underquilt takes just 90 seconds, and you can adjust insulation while you’re lying in the hammock thanks to easy-access tensioners. You don’t have to get out of your sleeping bag. With its β-chamber construction you can even hang it “inside-out,” with the chamber bellies facing out, to dial back warmth – a handy trick when you’re camping above the upper end of your underquilt’s recommended temperature range.

Tunnels with drawcords at the top and bottom seal out cold air and create the footbox/shoulderbox: three-dimensional spaces that envelop feet and shoulders, areas especially prone to heat loss. The multi-chamber design guarantees constant, maximum loft of the insulation.

Whats the UNGAPER?

An added sealing element is the UNGAPER. This clever buckle lifts the underquilt by up to 10 cm and closes the gap around shoulders and feet.

Multipurposed.

OTUL is more than an underquilt: the suspension system features a quick-release option that lets you transform the underquilt in seconds into a down blanket that can replace a sleeping bag or serve as a camping blanket during breaks, meal stops or any stationary activity. Waiting for morning coffee or watching the sunset in the mountains will no longer mean shivering!

How to manage your thermal comfort in a hammock – other essential tips.

You should always use the hammock underquilt in combination with a sleeping bag or topquilt suited to the conditions, and you should wear appropriate base layers. The underquilt does not replace your sleeping bag nor enhance its insulation. Although our suggested temperature ranges come from personal experience, feedback from our testing group and user impressions updated each season, your individual sensations may vary depending on overall temperature sensitivity, current physical and mental condition and weather factors (wind and humidity increase the chill factor). Sometimes 18°C feels cold and sometimes a light hoodie is enough at 10°C. So before a night in the wild always:

• eat well and stay hydrated
• avoid overexertion
• choose your layers wisely, stay dry and protect yourself from wind
